William ("Bill") Elmhirst was born in London in 1929 and grew up at Dartington Hall where his parents Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst founded the utopian community at Dartington, among composers, poets, dancers, playwrights and artists. He became the patron of the dancer Rudolf Laban, who had fled Nazi Germany to settle with the Elmhirsts. Photographed here on one of his rare visits to Dartington.
