Betty Freeman (1921-2009) was an American philanthropist and photographer. She was a long-standing supporter of contemporary music, giving grants and commissions to various American composers early in their careers. The composers she assisted included - among many others - Lou Harrison, John Cage, La Monte Young, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, Pierre Boulez, and Harrison Birtwistle. Many of these composers dedicated works to her. She was also an art collector and the subject of David Hockney's painting Beverly Hills Housewife. She was a warm and delightful subject to photograph.
