Alexander Goehr (born 1932), is a German born English composer and academic, photographed here at Dartington Music Summer School where he first taught in 1960. Born in Berlin he was the son of the conductor and composer Walter Goehr - a pupil of Arnold Schoenberg. In his early twenties he emerged as a central figure in the Manchester School of post-war British composers.
