Lou Harrison (1917-2003) was an American composer, music critic, music theorist, painter and creator of unique musical instruments. He would create his own musical ensembles and instruments with his partner William Colwig (1967-2000) who are both now considered founders of the American gamelan movement and world music along with composers Harry Partch, Claude Vivier and ethnomusicologist Colin McPhee. Photographed in the Great Hall, Dartington at the rehearsal of one of his piano pieces played by Joanna MacGregor. To the left of the photo is Wilfrid Mellers OBE an English music critic, musiclogist and composer.
