John Amis
John Amis (1922-2013) was a British broadcaster, classical music critic, music administrator and writer. He was a frequent contributor for The Guardian and to BBC radio and television music programming. In 1948, William Glock invited Amis to run a summer school for musicians at Bryanston School, Dorset. The Summer School moved to Dartington in 1953 and Amis remained administrative director until 1981, during which time he brought to the school a long line of international musicians amongst them Paul Hindemith, Igor Stravinsky and Michael Tippett. From the 1950's onwards, Amis became a regular contributor to BBC Radio's music output and worked on BBC television from 1961 producing and presenting documentaries.

Betty Freeman
Betty Freeman (1921-2009) was an American philanthropist and photographer. She was a long-standing supporter of contemporary music, giving grants and commissions to various American composers early in their careers. The composers she assisted included - among many others - Lou Harrison, John Cage, La Monte Young, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, Pierre Boulez, and Harrison Birtwistle. Many of these composers dedicated works to her. She was also an art collector and the subject of David Hockney's painting Beverly Hills Housewife. She was a warm and delightful subject to photograph.

Alan Sillitoe(1928-2010) was an English writer and one of the so-called "angry young men" of the 1950's. He apparently disliked the label, as did most of the other writers to whom it was applied. He is best known for his debut novel Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and his early short story The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, both of which were adapted into films. Wendell Berry - born 1934 - is an American novelist, poet, essayist, environmental activist, cultural critic and farmer. Closely identified with rural Kentucky, Berry developed many of his agrarian themes in the early essays of The Gift of Good Land (1981) and The Unsettling of America (1977). Joseph Havlat, pianist and composer was born in Hobart, Australia and studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London, taught by the renowned pianist Joanna MacGregor. He has performed in major concert venues around the world as a soloist and as part of chamber groups and orchestras. Red Rum (1965-1995) was an Irish champion Thoroughbred steeplechaser, who achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977, here seen 'opening' a betting shop in Totnes, Devon. It wasn't a huge space and small children were scrabbling around and under him but he kept very calm.

He began work as a researcher at the Research Centre, Kings College, Cambridge on a project into the effects of boarding education. Francisco Javier Varela Garcia
Francisco Javier Varela Garcia (1946-2001) - photographed at Dartington in 1998 - was a Chilean biologist, philosopher, cybernetician and neuroscientist who, together with his mentor Humberto Maturana, is best known for introducing the concept of autopoiesis* to biology and co-founding the Mind and Life Institute to promote dialogue between science and Buddhism. I photographed him here in 1998 when he was taking part in a conference - Psychology of Awakening - at Dartington Hall. *'autopoiesis" - a system capable of producing and maintaining itself by creating its own parts.
