The late Dmitri Smirnov (1948-2020) was a Russian-British composer and academic teacher. He wrote operas, symphonies, string quartets and other chamber music and vocal music from song to oratorio. Many of his works were inspired by the art of William Blake. His daughter Alissa, a Russian-British classical composer born in Moscow, moved with her family to the UK in 1991 and in 2001 won the BBC/Guardian Proms Young Composers competition.

Helen Sinclair Glatz (1908-1996) was an English composer and pianist, a pupil of Ralph Vaughan Wiliams. In 1933 She travelled to Vienna, Italy and Budapest where she studied under Zoltán Kodály and Sandor Vegh. She married linguist Wolf Glatz in Hungary and remained there during World War II until he could secure passage out of the country, fleeing as the Red Army took Budapest. The couple settled in South Devon and after her husband's death in 1952, she joined the staff at Dartington Hall, Totnes, where she taught piano, percussion, accompanied choirs, conducted and worked closely with Imogen Holst and Sir William Glock.

Minna Keal, née Mina Nerenstein (1909-1999) was a British composer born in the East End of London in 1909. After early compositions as a student at the Royal Academy of Music, she only returned to composing towards the end of her life observing that, "I felt I was coming to the end of my life, but now I feel as if I'm just beginning. He was known for his unique approach to improvisation and for many years ran a very popular Jazz Course at Dartington Summer School of Music where students of all ages and abilities, were encouraged to improvise - which was a very new area of music making to most of them - but they did so most successfully under his guidance and encouragement.
